The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) South Texas Chapter works to prevent suicide and bring hope to people affected by suicide throughout San Antonio, Bexar County and South Texas. The South Texas Chapter serves 42 counties, including Bexar, Atascosa, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Medina, Wilson and surrounding communities. Its grassroots work includes suicide prevention education, public awareness, research support, advocacy and outreach to individuals and families who have lost someone to suicide.

AFSP provides suicide prevention presentations and educational programs for individuals, schools, organizations, employers and community groups. Organizations can request programs and professional training directly from the South Texas Chapter. One of AFSP's primary educational programs is Talk Saves Lives, an introduction to suicide prevention that teaches participants about suicide, prevention research and actions people can take to help save lives.

AFSP also offers More Than Sad, which helps parents, educators and other adults who work with teenagers recognize warning signs, begin conversations and connect young people with help. Its It's Real program focuses on mental health challenges experienced by high school and college students. Support is also available for people who have lost a loved one to suicide, with AFSP providing suicide-loss resources, education and opportunities for connection with others who understand this type of grief.
