Artvango Therapy Center provides specialized mental health counseling for children and families in San Antonio, with a primary focus on children who have experienced foster care, adoption or trauma. Artvango is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2017 by Yadi Puente, a foster and adoptive mother and board-certified art therapist. The organization grew from her family's experience seeing the shortage of mental health resources for children in foster care, particularly providers accepting Medicaid.
Artvango's clinicians use expressive therapy, incorporating art, play, music, movement and other forms of expression into counseling. These approaches can be especially helpful for children who have difficulty explaining complicated feelings and experiences verbally. The center's child-friendly therapeutic environment includes art materials, sand-tray materials, sensory tools, swings, musical instruments and pretend-play resources. Treatment is individualized to help children develop skills, improve emotional regulation and work through challenging behaviors.
Artvango also emphasizes caregiver involvement. Clinicians educate parents and guardians about trauma, attachment, stress responses, co-regulation and strategies that can be practiced at home.
