Good Samaritan Community Services – Family & Community Support in San Antonio

Good Samaritan Community Services is a San Antonio nonprofit helping children, youth, adults, families, and seniors overcome the challenges of economic poverty and build greater stability. Located on San Antonio’s West Side, Good Sam connects residents with education, family support, youth development, senior programs, food assistance, and other community resources.


Programs include child development services for young children, youth and teen programs, family development services, and senior services. They work with families across generations, helping children develop and learn while providing parents, adults, and older residents with resources that support stronger and more stable households.


Youth & Teen Services provide after-school and summer programming, homework assistance, STEM activities, character development, mentoring, college and career readiness, and youth case management. They provide students with a safe environment for summer learning, enrichment, and activities. They assistance with emergency food, hygiene kits, basic-needs support, and referrals to additional community resources such as rental assistance, food services, senior services, and mental health resources. Eligibility requirements may apply. Senior services provide older adults with opportunities for social connection, nutrition, wellness, recreation, and other activities designed to support healthy and active aging.

Simon Salas

Simon Salas serves as president and chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Community Services (GSCS). As conditions became increasingly desperate in an impoverished barrio on the west side of San Antonio known as the "Death Triangle," the Episcopal Diocese of West Texas formed the Good Samaritan Center of San Antonio in 1951. Good Samaritan’s initial focus was on the health and wellness of its neighbors and works with the city and other local partners to provide vaccinations and other essential services to children and families.


Today, Good Samaritan continues its work as a nonprofit organization, supported by the United Way and other local foundations and corporations, a neighborhood anchor providing comprehensive services to over 3,600 low-income individuals annually. It has been the primary social service resource provider for residents of the near-west side of San Antonio and South Texas for more than seventy years.


We create value for our neighbors and the stakeholders that invest in our neighbors because we are community-based, serve community-driven needs, and focus on outcomes that increase access to economic stability for individuals and families. Good Samaritan’s accredited and nationally recognized core programs and services are provided by two departments, Youth and Teen Services and Family Development Services. Neighbors served by Good Sam include young children, youth, adults and seniors through programs offered by:

Child Development Services

  • Good Sam’s Early Head Start programs serves infants 6 weeks - 3 years old.
  • Parents as Teachers program supports parents with children prenatal & infants - 5 years old.


Family Development Services

  • Senior Center includes a senior nutrition program and older adult well-being programs for adults 60 years old and above.
  • Adult Programming & Education promoting parent education.
  • Food Security and feeding individuals and families.


Students in 1st - 12th grade in San Antonio and Brownsville

  • Out-of-School Time (OST) is an academic support program for children 6 - 17 years old, to include Youth Case Management (YCM).
  • Asset Building for Clients (ABC) includes weekly lessons and activities promoting personal growth.
  • College and Career Readiness support youths’ transition into post-secondary education or the workforce.
  • Camp Good Sam is a summer camp that includes six weeks of summer learning program in Brownsville and San Antonio campuses.
