Ministry House of Restoration San Antonio Church (MHORSC) is a faith-based nonprofit in San Antonio, Texas, helping individuals and families affected by substance dependency, addiction and homelessness find hope, stability and restoration through the Gospel of Jesus Christ. MHORSC provides faith-based addiction recovery support, a 9-month discipleship program, sober living, life skills education, counseling and community assistance. Ministry House of Restoration San Antonio Church began its substance use and recovery ministry in 2012. The church is part of the Restoration Family of Ministries, a nationwide network of independent Christian churches and ministries serving people affected by substance use and alcohol addiction. The network has ministries in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Alabama, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and other locations. Ministry House of Restoration San Antonio Church is a Christian ministry centered on the belief that lasting transformation begins by receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.
Through prayer, Bible study, spiritual guidance, and a structured environment, the ministry helps participants place God at the center of their recovery. Many people entering the program have not experienced stability or structure for a long time. The ministry teaches that when someone is committed to changing, transformation is possible. Rather than allowing addiction to define the person, the church seeks to understand and address the underlying issues that contributed to the person’s substance use.
A Structured Recovery and Transitional Program
The program serves approximately 30 men and women and lasts nine months, although some have remained for as long as six years. After completing the nine-month program, participants may stay in the church’s transitional home while they find employment, rebuild their independence, and prepare to contribute to the community. The church partners with Haven for Hope and San Antonio Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, which may contact the church about accepting someone into the program. The ministry also partners with Kingdom Restoration Lab to help participants obtain their birth certificate, Social Security card, and driver’s license. They may also receive help opening a savings account, managing a checkbook, creating a budget, and learning financial responsibility. One former participant completed the entire process, obtained his own home, and started a small business. He continues attending Sunday church services and Bible studies and returns to participate in the ministry because it was an important part of his recovery, healing, and success.
Work Programs Build Responsibility
The church operates work programs through which participants provide services such as lawn care, tree trimming, and professional cleaning. Keeping participants active helps them develop structure, responsibility, teamwork, and practical employment skills instead of spending the day alone with their thoughts.
Participants have provided professional cleaning services following school football games and at large events and venues, including concerts and NIOSA. Revenue from these work programs helps the church continue operating. The church does not receive grants and depends on donations and income generated through its work programs.
Support for Justice-Involved Participants
The church also supports justice-involved individuals by helping them meet their probation requirements. The local probation office is familiar with the ministry and may contact church leaders when assistance is needed. The church helps participants attend court dates, probation appointments, and other required meetings. This support helps them remain accountable while rebuilding their lives and working toward long-term stability.
Medical and Mental Health Support
When participants need a psychiatrist, primary care physician, or another healthcare professional, the church encourages them to receive appropriate medical care. Ministry staff follow up on medical recommendations and help participants remain consistent with prescribed medications.
