Expanded Roots Counseling

Nevetta King

Nevetta King started Expanded Roots Counseling in 2018. The organization was born from her own experiences with trauma, healing, and therapy—and from a growing passion to walk alongside others facing difficult seasons in their lives. Nevetta believes lasting healing often begins when we are willing to address the root matters behind our pain.

“We all, at some point, deal with adversity and trauma,” she explains. For Nevetta, faith is an important part of that healing journey. Expanded Roots Counseling is a faith-based counseling ministry that encourages people to draw strength from God as they work through trauma, relationships, anxiety, rejection, and other challenges.

Nevetta began her work in the foster care community, counseling children who had experienced abandonment and neglect. Her messages is simple: What happened to you was not your fault, and your past does not have to define your future. She helps children recognize their value, challenge negative thoughts, and begin writing a different story for their lives. Nevetta helps clients examine the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and actions.

One young woman came to Nevetta as an adolescent after experiencing tremendous rejection. She was part of a large sibling group in which the other children had been adopted, but she had not. Nevetta worked with her to understand her value and identity in Christ and to know that she was loved by her Creator. Years later, that young woman graduated from high school and became a successful mother.

Nevetta also brings lessons from her own 34-year marriage into her work with couples. She often counsels couples facing serious challenges, including infidelity and substance abuse. One principle guides much of this work: Two great forgivers can outlast adversity. Rather than allowing adversity to become something that permanently separates a couple, Nevetta encourages couples who want to save their marriage to work through forgiveness, accountability, faith, and restoration.

One couple came to her determined to fight for their marriage. They had children and had already shared many years together. Nevetta helped the husband learn to forgive himself, and his wife to accept her husband's forgiveness, and ultimately embrace God's forgiveness. The couple worked with Nevetta for more than a year. Today, their marriage continues—and they are expecting their fourth child.

Another client, a man in his 30s, was struggling with anxiety and panic attacks so severe that getting through a workday had become extremely difficult. Nevetta introduced him to the T.H.I.N.K. Model, encouraging him to examine his thoughts by asking: Is this thought True? Is it Helpful? Is it Inspiring?

Is it Necessary? Is it Kind? Instead of focusing on making it through an entire day, they started small. First, 15 minutes. Then 30 minutes. Then an hour.

Eventually, four hours. Over time, anxiety no longer had the same grip on his daily life.

Perhaps one of the most powerful parts of Expanded Roots Counseling's mission is Nevetta's commitment to helping people regardless of their ability to pay.

She believes God placed it on her heart to never allow money to stand in the way of walking alongside someone during a time of crisis. Expanded Roots Counseling does not accept insurance. However, when someone has insurance, Nevetta says she charges an amount comparable to their copayment. For Nevetta, Expanded Roots Counseling is more than a counseling practice. It s a ministry. It is a calling. And it is an opportunity to remind people that their trauma, rejection, mistakes, and adversity do not have to write the final chapter of their story.
