Ministry House of Restoration San Antonio Church began its substance use and recovery ministry in 2012. The church is part of the Restoration Family of Ministries, a nationwide network of independent Christian churches and ministries serving people affected by substance use and alcohol addiction. The network has ministries in Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, Alabama, Illinois, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and other locations. Ministry House of Restoration San Antonio Church is a Christian ministry centered on the belief that lasting transformation begins by receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Through prayer, Bible study, spiritual guidance, and a structured environment, the ministry helps participants place God at the center of their recovery.

Many people entering the program have not experienced stability or structure for a long time. The ministry teaches that when someone is committed to changing, transformation is possible. Rather than allowing addiction to define the person, the church seeks to understand and address the underlying issues that contributed to the person’s substance use. The primary requirement for entering the program is a sincere desire to change. The ministry welcomes people from many different backgrounds, including individuals with extensive criminal histories related to substance use, former gang members, people leaving prostitution, people experiencing homelessness, and individuals recently released from jail. Through its homeless outreach, the church meets people who are ready to begin a different life. Sometimes, someone will be waiting outside when the church opens its doors and simply ask, “Can I get some help?”

A Structured Recovery and Transitional Program

The church generally serves approximately 30 men and women in its program. Its primary recovery program lasts nine months, although some participants have remained connected to the ministry for as long as six years. After completing the nine-month program, participants may stay in the church’s transitional home while they find employment, rebuild their independence, and prepare to contribute to the community. There is no fixed timeline for leaving; participants may stay as long as they need while continuing to make progress. The church strives to provide a supportive environment where every resident feels at home.

The church partners with Haven for Hope and San Antonio Behavioral Healthcare Hospital, which may contact the church about accepting someone into the program. The ministry also partners with Kingdom Restoration Lab to help participants obtain important documents, including birth certificates, Social Security cards, and driver’s licenses. These documents help participants prepare to search and apply for employment after completing the initial program. They may also receive help opening a savings account, managing a checkbook, creating a budget, and learning financial responsibility. One former participant completed the entire process, obtained his own home, and started a small business. He continues attending Sunday church services and Bible studies and returns to participate in the ministry because it was an important part of his recovery, healing, and success.
